1. Overview

The Separation Roller/Pad works with the Pickup Roller in the paper feed system to prevent multi-sheet feeding. The pickup roller grabs the top sheet; the separation roller/pad blocks the second sheet, ensuring single-sheet feeding.

Core Duties: (1) Prevent double-feed (2) Form friction differential with pickup roller (3) Endure repeated paper friction (4) Replace in kit with pickup roller

2. Working Principle

2A. Basic Structure

Component Description
Separation Pad Static friction pad, fixed at paper tray front edge; micro-pore NBR rubber + felt liner + steel backplate
Separation Roller Small rubber roller, counter-rotates via one-way clutch; Shore A 70-78 degrees
Spring Preload Applies 1.0-2.5N line pressure to pad; detachment causes guaranteed multi-feed
Pickup Roller Forward friction grabs top sheet (mu=0.4-0.6); separation provides reverse mu=0.3-0.5

2B. Separation Workflow

Step Description
1 Pickup roller drags top sheet out, second sheet follows to tray edge
2 Second sheet hits separation pad/roller, encounters reverse friction
3 Top sheet: pickup friction > separation resistance, proceeds
4 Second sheet: separation resistance > pickup friction, returns to stack
5 Result: single-sheet feed, success rate >99.5% (new condition)

3. Core Technical Parameters

Parameter Specification
Pad Material Porous NBR rubber + felt liner + steel backplate; fine micro-pores store toner dust
Roller Material POM core + NBR/silicone outer ring, Shore A 70-78 degrees
Friction Coeff. Reverse mu approx. 0.3-0.5 (lower than pickup forward mu 0.4-0.6)
Contact Pressure Spring preload 1.0-2.5N; insufficient = separation failure, excessive = no single feed
Dimensions Pad: ~25x45x25mm; Roller: OD 15-25mm; varies by tray width
Paper Weight 60-220 g/m²; thick/glossy paper increases double-feed risk
Service Life 25,000-150,000 pages, synchronized with pickup roller PM cycle
RH Range Recommended 40-60% RH; high humidity increases sheet adhesion

4. Common Error Codes

Code Meaning Root Cause Action
13.B2.D2/D3/D4/D5 Tray 2/3 input delay / multi-feed Worn separation pad + pickup roller Replace as kit
13.B2.D1 Tray 1 multi-feed / delay MP tray separation pad worn Replace MP tray kit
13.01-03.00 Tray jam / no pickup Pad hardened, no separation force Replace separation pad
41.03.xx Pickup abnormality (M607/M608) Separation mechanism jammed Check clutch and spring
60.0x Feed hardware error Pad spring detached / clutch stuck Reattach / replace
Er/03 No paper false alarm Multi-sheet misread as empty Replace separation kit
Key: No pickup = pickup roller; Multi-feed only = separation pad/roller; Both = replace both as kit

5. Troubleshooting

5A. Symptoms

Symptom Diagnosis
Double Feed (2-3 sheets) Pad hardened / micro-pores clogged with toner
Accordion Jam Multi-sheet forced into narrow registration path
Recurring after cleaning Rubber vulcanized, cleaning ineffective, must replace
Thick/glossy always multi-feeds Separation differential insufficient for stiff media
Pad spring missing Zero pressure = guaranteed multi-feed

5B. Diagnostic Steps

  1. Hard reset: disconnect power 60 seconds, plug directly into wall outlet.
  2. Visual: remove tray, check pad surface for shine, grooves, paper dust crust.
  3. Tactile: finger on pad should feel rough; shine = worn out, must replace.
  4. Clean test: warm water or 99% IPA wipe; if multi-feed returns in days, replace.
  5. Cross test: Tray 1 single-feed OK but Tray 2 multi-feed = Tray 2 pad + pickup kit.
  6. Spring check: pad underside spring detached = zero pressure = guaranteed multi-feed.

6. Replacement Guide

Tools Required: Anti-static gloves, Phillips screwdriver, isopropyl alcohol, lint-free cloth, replacement kit.

Procedure:

  1. Power off, disconnect power, wait 20 minutes.
  2. Open side cover, remove paper tray and pickup roller assembly.
  3. Remove old separation pad from tray front edge; check for broken spring.
  4. Install new pad with spring properly seated; ensure flush fit (hear snap).
  5. Replace pickup roller in same kit (never replace pad alone).
  6. Reassemble tray, insert into printer, verify snap-in.
  7. Run Paper Path Test in service mode; reset Tray Life Count if error persists.
Never touch rubber surface with bare fingers; do not lose pad spring; always replace pickup + separation as a kit

7. OEM vs. Compatible

Dimension OEM Original Compatible
Pad Material Porous NBR with micro-pore oil storage layer Plain rubber, no micro-pores, hardens in 3k pages
Friction Stability Stable mu throughout 100k+ page life Mu drops sharply after 10k pages
Spring Quality Stainless steel, consistent 2N pressure Carbon steel, fatigues to 1N in 6 months
Service Life 50,000-150,000 pages 10,000-30,000 pages
Double-feed Rate <0.5% throughout life Rises to 5-15% after 15k pages
Warranty Standard HP warranty Limited warranty, many exclusions

8. FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between separation roller and separation pad?
A1: Separation roller is a small rotating rubber wheel (counter-rotates); separation pad is a fixed friction pad. HP trays use pickup roller + pad; ADF uses pickup roller + separation roller.
Q2: Only multi-feed, no jam — can I just replace the pickup roller?
A2: No. Multi-feed means separation failure. Replacing only pickup roller grabs harder. Must replace separation pad/roller (best as a kit).
Q3: Can I flip the separation pad to use the other side?
A3: Some old models have reversible pads, but micro-pore layer wears on one side; life drops sharply after flip. Not recommended — just replace.
Q4: Why does thick paper cause multi-feed?
A4: Thick paper has high stiffness; separation differential is insufficient to break inter-sheet adhesion. Need higher-mu pad or reduced feed speed.
Q5: Are ADF separation rollers and tray separation pads interchangeable?
A5: Not interchangeable. Dimensions, mounting, and friction formula differ. Separate part numbers (e.g., Z7Y65A/Z8W51A for ADF, RM1-6323 for tray).
Q6: How often should they be replaced?
A6: Same cycle as pickup roller (25k-150k pages). Replace as a kit during PM; do not wait for multi-feed to appear.
