The Registration Assembly is the timing mechanism in the HP laser printer paper path that controls when and at what angle paper enters the transfer zone. It does not heat or image, but incorrect registration directly causes overall print offset, ghosting, or jams before fusing.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis

  1. Power-cycle: unplug 60 seconds, plug direct to wall outlet to clear transient errors.
  2. Visual inspection: open front door, remove cartridge, shine light ahead of transfer zone; check for paper strips, staples, adhesive; check SR6 optical window for toner blockage.
  3. Check flags: legacy models (M601/M602/M603) have 3~4 linked flags; they should spring back freely. Stuck = clear or replace assembly.
  4. Clean rollers: glazed rubber wipe with damp lint-free cloth + warm water; no acetone; air-dry before reinstall.

6. Replacement Guide

  1. Power off, unplug, wait 5 minutes (no high temp but DC board power must be disconnected).
  2. Open front door, remove toner cartridge and waste bin if blocking access to registration assembly.

Q1: Is Registration Assembly the same as Registration Roller?
A: No. The assembly is the complete unit (rollers + shutter + sensor + clutch); the roller is just the rubber pair inside. 'Replace registration roller' usually means replacing the roller portion of the full assembly.
Q2: Difference between 13.A2 and 13.B2?
A: 13.A2 = paper physically jammed in registration zone or residual paper at power-on. 13.B2 = paper stay/timeout at registration sensor during printing, usually roller slip.
Q3: Does 41.03 always mean a bad registration assembly?
A: Not always. ~40% caused by wrong tray size switch, loose paper guide, or multi-feed. Run Registration Test after clearing; if 41.03 persists, check clutch.
Q4: Can the legacy shutter be replaced alone?
