1. Overview
The main drive gear train is the mechanical backbone of an HP laser printer. Driven by the main motor (M101/M102 class, ~24V DC), it distributes rotational power through a cluster of molded nylon/POM gears to every timed subsystem: pickup clutch, registration clutch, transfer drive, fuser drive, duplexer drive, and ITB (transfer belt) drive. A single cracked tooth stalls the whole engine and throws 59.F0/13.B2/60.02 class codes. On Enterprise M600/M500 series the train is sold as a factory pre-loaded assembly (e.g. RM1-8489-000CN for M601-M603 drum drive, RM2-5715-000CN for M507/M528 Tray-2 feed drive) - loose gears are not sold separately.

5. Troubleshooting
Common symptoms:
- 59.F0 on boot, no print ever = train locked or motor dead
- Loud grinding from right side on power-up = RM2-5715 gear teeth stripped (M507/M528)
- Repeating 13.B2.D2 on Tray 2 only = pickup-clutch gear inside train stripped, not pickup roller
- Periodic knock every few sheets = backlash >0.04mm, phase slip, replace train assy
- 60.02 Tray 2 will not lift = lift-drive gear in RM2-5715 stripped

8. FAQ
- Q: Is 59.F0 always the main motor dead?
- A: No. HP official KB says 59.F0 = rotation error, most often a broken gear tooth in the main train or a seized drum gear, not the motor. Motor death ~20% of cases; train damage ~60%.
- Q: Can I replace just the broken gear?
- A: Technically yes on very old P4014/P4515 class where loose gears were sold, but on M501+ the train is a pre-loaded assembly (RM2-5715 / RM1-8489) - rebuilding loose gears voids mesh phase, causes 41.03. Field rule: swap the assy.
- Q: Why does M507 love 60.02 and grinding noise?
- A: RM2-5715-000CN feed drive assy uses white nylon lift/pickup gears that embrittle after 150k pages in heat; teeth strip, Tray 2 will not lift (60.02) and grinds on boot. HP service note points straight to RM2-5715.
- Q: 52.1/52.2 looks like gear fault but is not?
- A: Correct. 52.x is laser scanner motor/beam error, unrelated to mechanical train. If you see 52.1, check scanner first, do not tear into right cover.
- Q: Does 0.04mm backlash really matter?
- A: Yes. Phase error >5 degrees (backlash >0.04mm) makes drum linear speed fluctuate 3%, causing color registration drift and ghosting on M600/M800 color machines.
- Q: Do inkjet printers have this same gear train?
- A: No. This guide is laser-only. OfficeJet/DeskJet use a smaller carriage/feed gear set with different codes (carriage jam, not 59.F0).
