5.2 Step-by-Step Diagnosis
- Power off, unplug for 60 seconds, plug directly into wall outlet (not surge strip).
- Open left-side door, press latch, pull out duplexer module. Visually inspect channel for paper debris, staples, glue residue.
- Check SR1DU / SR2DU sensor flags for free movement; clean photo-interrupter slots with lint-free cloth.
- Inspect de-skew roller and reverse roller surfaces. Finger-touch should feel coarse; shiny = worn, must replace.
- Manually rotate large duplex gear; should rotate one-way only (one-way clutch check).
- Power on, select duplex print job. Listen for diverter 'click' sound. If silent, diverter motor/solenoid is dead.
WARNING: Never run duplex with paper >120 g/m² or envelopes. This is the #1 cause of repeated 13.D3 jams.
6. Replacement Guide
6.2 Procedure
- Power off, unplug, wait 20 minutes for cooling.
- Open left-side access door; press blue latch; pull duplexer module straight out.
- Remove duplex feed roller, reverse roller, de-skew roller (note orientation and spring positions).
- Disconnect diverter solenoid plug if replacing diverter assembly.
- Install new rollers onto new frame; ensure springs seat correctly under de-skew roller.
- Slide duplexer back into chassis until latch 'snaps' locks into place. Close left door.
- Enter service mode → Paper Path Test / Duplex Feed Test. Reset Duplexer Life Count if panel still shows error.
WARNING: Never touch rubber roller surfaces with bare fingers. Skin oils cause localized slippage. Handle by plastic hubs only.
WARNING: Duplexer module must be fully seated until audible click. Partial insertion causes SR2DU misalignment → repeated 13.D3.

- Q1: Are all duplex jams reported as 13.Dx?
- A: Yes. HP laser printers unify duplex-path errors under 13.D1 (entry), 13.D2 (inside), 13.D3 (re-feed). Code 61.B5.13 indicates diverter motor stall. Code 22 is NOT duplex-related.
- Q2: Why does simplex work but duplex always jams?
- A: Simplex does not use the reverse path. Duplex requires the paper to flip and re-register; any worn roller, weak spring, or dirty sensor in the duplexer will surface immediately.
- Q3: 13.D3 keeps returning after clearing paper. What is the root cause?
- A: In 90% of cases, the SR2DU flag is stuck or the de-skew roller is broken (common on M402/M404/M428). Inspect these two points first; do not look in the main paper path.
- Q4: Can I duplex heavy paper or envelopes?
- A: 60-105 g/m² works normally. 105-120 g/m² requires Heavy media setting and reduced speed. Above 120 g/m², envelopes, and labels: duplex is NOT supported. Forcing it causes repeated jams.
- Q5: Can I replace only the rollers, not the whole duplexer?
- A: Yes. Roller kits (e.g. RM2-5454 for M400 series) allow in-place replacement. Many service providers swap the full module to save labor time and reduce comeback risk.
- Q6: What does 61.B5.13 mean?
- A: The diverter gate motor has stalled, usually because paper debris is blocking the gate or the solenoid has failed. Clear the gate area first; if the error persists, replace the diverter motor assembly (e.g. A7W93-67056).
